Best Place for Peranakan Lunch in George Town, Penang: Moh Teng Pheow
Among diverse cuisines in Penang, Nyonya cuisine is one of the must-eats. Today, I’m going to introduce a nyonya-style restaurant recommended by locals: Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay. The restaurant features its unique, colorful dishes with nostalgic flavors. Despite its heavy flavors, Moh Teng Pheow sells food you should never miss if you travel to Penang, Malaysia.

Introduce Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay
Have you watched “The Ghost Bride” on Netflix? Think about the places and foods that appeared in the series. Those wouldn’t appear in Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Mainland China, but in Malaysia and Singapore. As you enter the restaurant, you’ll notice the overall decor is highly similar to that of the houses in the series. Visiting this restaurant is like stepping into a time machine where you can travel to a Peranakan-style house in ancient times.
In addition, you can see the chefs are putting their full effort into making pastries. I was really lucky to be able to witness the making of steamed layer cake. I couldn’t help myself but praise their incredible cooking skills, for the pastries looked absolutely appetizing! The restaurant is giving a vintage atmosphere. Despite the small space, the restaurant won its popularity by its comfy environment and delicious Peranakan dishes of multiple choices, including home dishes like curry with tumeric rice, laksa, Nyonya-style steamed coconut milk rice, and more.
Recommendations for Pastry: Seri Muja, Pulut Tai Tai, Pulut Inti, and Kuih Koci
Seri Muka is a pastry combining coconut steamed rice with the quintessence of pandan leaves. It has an appealing presentation featuring a jade green layer of cake on top as an eye-catcher. I personally recommend Pulut Tai Tai (blue rice cake with kaya paste). It’s a quadrilateral rice cake in white and blue. We usually eat it after dipping it in kaya paste. This pastry usually appears at weddings for Chinese people. It tastes impressively delicious!
The shape of Pulut Inti (rice cake with shredded coconut) resembles that of Mt. Fuji. How lovely!
Pulut Inti and Kuih Koci (blue glutinous rice cake) were my favorites in my childhood. Despite their considerable sweetness, the rich layers of flavors haunt my memory. My heart was always melted by their cuteness whenever I saw the shredded coconut filling revealed its little part from the wrapping pandan leaf. After you finish filling in the menu, you can make an order at the cash counter. There’s a display shelf right next to the counter, showing all the Peranakan desserts of the day, so you can check on the labels in case the menu leaves you no clue about what the food looks like.
Kuih Koci is a delish pastry worth trying. It emits mouth-watering fragrance.
The freshly cooked desserts are arranged right next to the cash counter. Customers can take a look before ordering.
What to Eat at Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay
On the day of our visit, we ordered an abundant feast of Peranakan cuisine. Here let me introduce these dishes.
Curry chicken is a perfect match with tumeric rice. Despite its small portion, it will sate your appetite as long as you eat it with pastry.
Turmeric rice is usually served in palm size. You’ll be eager to have one more even after you finish it.
Penang laksa is the most popular dish in Penang. It is highly recommended by locals. With the balanced sourness and sweetness, the broth is pretty appetizing.
Don’t forget to order some drinks! The drinks from the left to the right are iced milk tea, iced milo, and iced coffee, all of which are the national drinks of Malaysia.
